Hardening Off: Why Seedlings Need a Week of Bootcamp

Hardening off is the 7–10 day process of gradually exposing indoor-raised seedlings to the outdoors — sun, wind, and swinging temperatures — before you transplant them. It is the step new gardeners most often skip, and skipping it is the most common way a healthy seedling dies in its first week in the ground.

Why indoor seedlings are defenseless: A seedling raised on a windowsill or under a grow light has never met the real world. Still air, filtered light, and steady warmth grow a plant that looks lush but is soft — thin leaves, a barely-there waxy coat, and a tall, weak stem. Move it straight into full sun and wind and it has no defenses ready.

What actually changes

Hardening off isn't coddling — it triggers real, measurable changes in the plant:

Transplant shock

Skip the ramp and you get transplant shock: wilting, bleached or crispy leaves, snapped stems, and a plant that sits and sulks for weeks instead of growing. One sunny, breezy afternoon can undo six weeks of careful work on the windowsill.

The seven-day ramp

Ease them out, a little more each day:

Two cautions: don't harden off during a frost or a windstorm, and check water daily — outdoor air dries small pots fast. Keep warm-season crops like tomatoes and peppers above about 55°F. A little yellowing of the oldest leaves is normal; the plant is trading soft indoor tissue for tough outdoor growth.

What the research says

The mechanisms are well established: the wind-strengthening response and the thicker wax of sun-grown leaves are both documented in the peer-reviewed literature. The exact day counts, though, are conventional extension guidance, not lab-calibrated law — a cool, cloudy week is gentler than a hot, bright one, so read your weather and your plants.

Quick wins

No special gear needed — a shaded porch or the north side of the house makes a fine first station. If starting seeds indoors gave your plants a head start, hardening off is how you keep it.
